Christmas Eve with the Avellino's!

After I don't know how many years I finally got to spend Christmas Eve with my brother, Esty, and their three boys! It was great! - Sweet, and simple, head-achy too (not because of the boys, but due to eating too late, drinking a glass of "wine", and basically no sleep) but it was sweet, memorable, and I'm so glad it worked out.
Here are some pics we took!
The Avellino's
My brother, Niel, and I (I had a pic where I look better, but he's smiling so nicely here, I had to post it. - For those who know my bro, he rarely opens his mouth to smile in pics - so this is a memorable occasion.)
My sister-in-law, Esty, and I! - Such a hot and beautiful woman! ILY Esty!
Brian and I - such a love! (And a total photocopy of my older brother!)
Francis and I! - Shocking to see how big these guys are getting!
And this is little Justin and I! - He's the one that looks like me. :D
I love this one - my bro with his boys!

Merry Christmas to you all!

Guess what?

Remember that post I put right before this? - About the $10,000? Well, it's been awesome really, I feel like a little girl all eager to see what the Lord's going to do to supply! I KNOW He will, I've seen Him do it over and over, and it's not because I think I'm any more special than anyone else. - HONESTLY! (Unless we're talking mental type of "special", but yeah, that's another story!)

So yes, the day I posted the blog post, I also sent a quick prayer request to all on my yahoo chat. - I figure if I pray for them, I can get them to pray for me. ;) I get these sweet comments and replies, reassurances of prayer, so I'm all the more revved up knowing lots of people are praying for us!

And then this evening, about an hour before dinner, I get someone pop me in reply to the offline, and it's someone I hadn't heard from in about 2 years perhaps? Yup - 2 years! He asks me what it's for, etc. and then offers to help with some! - How much? $1000! YES!!! That's another 10%!!! Just like that! Through another unexpected way! - We're now at 11% people! YAY! :)

Hey, call me simple-minded to get all jazzed about these things, but it rocks to see the Lord doing it! I tell you, I'm having a great time. I'm sitting behind my desk, doing my job, trusting the Lord that I can't be out there every day for our "Christmas push" (I should tell you that I love witnessing! - And the Lord supplies financially when I do outreach too, so TYJ for that!), but I'm praying it in.

Just you wait, I'll be boasting the miracle in no time! - No time! TYJ!

Memories - and prayer needed!

Last night we had a prayer meeting asking the Lord to supply $10,000 within 2 weeks. - That would cover our December and January budget, and seeing as we're not a witnessing Home (though we are working on getting into the hang of it) this is no small request. - But hey, we have the greatest and richest Boss in the Universe - what's $10,000 to Him? Right?!

Going along with the prayer drive from this month we're making our request an order really, after all, the Lord has promised to supply, so I'm excited to see what the Lord has in store. - And I figured I would post about it so that when the miracle comes through, I can share the joy with all of you too - and show once again how spoiled we really are.

Speaking of spoiled, it brought me down memory lane as I recall last year, right around this time, the Lord showed me to visit my grandma, and give the Lord the gift of "sacrifice". I quote "It's cheerfully visiting an old or boring relative and making them feel that you're having a great time." My grandma wasn't boring, and it wasn't a painfully boring situation, but it did mean Christmas in a retirement Home, and a very calm time, opposed to the lively Christmases we have here. ;) I'm so thankful I did that though as now that my grandma's gone to be with the Lord, I know it was His perfect timing for me to spend that week with her. You might recall though that I needed $350 to get the ticket (though more like $500 by the time I bought the ticket) and what do you know, just two days later I was boasting of the Lord's supply.

So I'm doing that again - I'm letting it be known what our need is, I (we) have let the Lord know, and I know He's going to do it. - And hey, I woke up this morning to find that 1% of that was in my bank account (totally unexpected source), so I'm inspired. - It's just 1% of things to come. :D

Pray with me? Thanks!

This is quality!

I found this and laughed - it's so good! You've probably gotta have lived in Europe to understand it, but it's still great!

Nights gone by

This is from last week, but I still want to post it...

It came, it was, and it ended. - My first time at our city's benefit dinner! It was cool! - And that's even after being in incredible pain for hours in those heels (WHO invented heels?), having a back ache, which moved up to my head and neck, and was quite the torture for about 3 days.

Talk about a whacko day, first off I forgot/didn't have time to grab something to eat for lunch, and though I thankfully made up for it as soon as I could, I was already car sick by then. We then get to the place, and find we have to do the set-up basically, putting these white covers on the chairs and tieing bows. - Turns out I was one of the few that actually managed to do so (yes, it was rather odd flopsy material), but only because I had this special "straddle-the-chair-hang-your-head-upside-down" tactic, and found myself getting all dizzy, coupled with the aforementioned forgetting to eat part, which found me thanking the Lord for a chocolate bar I had in my purse, as I was getting very faint. Heh! Oh well!

Then came the dressing up - I got to borrow Linda (of Justin)'s dress - this long, and lovely Chinese dress...oh yes, it was flattering all right. Not only did I manage to fit into Linda's dress (yes, that is a feat which is flattering) but it actually looked good, or so it seems. - So fun! Of course, I did find it incredibly hard to bend over without the dress riding up and the slit going way too high (ooops), but yes, it was fun to be dressed up, and I hope I find some pics.

(Update: I don't seem to have many pics - HA! If I find I'll post - for now, this is the only one.)

I still need to get used to the concept of the Mexican way with people's lack of coming through with their word. - They seem to say "yes, yes", but that doesn't really mean much. We had 3 people coming, 2 even had us confirm, that was, yeah, I don't know, it was discouraging, but PTL, who knows, maybe next year there'll be a different outcome. - We shall see.

On the other hand I found myself quite usefully put to work, so that was good, amidst setting up, helping get the food set out for staff, being one of the greeters (and even being called Russian - HA!), helping hang up the coats, cutting up the drink coupons, helping sell the Bingo tickets, holding the bingo slot so it wouldn't fly all over the table, and even trying to dance in those heels (yes, that was painful! - VERY!) it was fun, and a memorable occasion.

Oh, and I got to see a friend I hadn't seen in a few years - now that made me happy! ;)

Someone shared this with me...

...and I thought to share it with you!

This is a beautiful story of a student in the theology class of Father John Powell, a professor at Loyola. Father Powell was a popular lecturer in the 60s and 70s at religious conferences.....

Some twelve years ago, I stood watching my university students file into the classroom for our first session in the Theology of Faith. That was the first day I first saw Tommy. My eyes and my mind both blinked. He was combing his long flaxen hair, which hung six inches below his shoulders. It was the first time I had ever seen a boy with hair that long. I guess it was just coming into fashion then. I know in my mind that it isn't what's on your head but what's in it that counts, but on that day I was unprepared and my emotions flipped. I immediately filed Tommy under "S" for strange . . . very strange.

Tommy turned out to be the "atheist in residence" in my Theology of Faith course. He constantly objected to, smirked at, or whined about the possibility of an unconditionally loving Father/God. We lived with each other in relative peace for one semester, although I admit he was for me at times a serious pain in the back pew.

When he came up at the end of the course to turn in his final exam, he asked in a slightly cynical tone, "Do you think I'll ever find God?" I decided instantly on a little shock therapy. "No!" I said very emphatically.

"Oh," he responded, "I thought that was the product you were pushing."

I let him get five steps from the classroom door and then called out, "Tommy! I don't think you'll ever find Him, but I am absolutely certain that He will find you!" He shrugged a little and left my class and my life. I felt slightly disappointed at the thought that he had missed my clever line, "He will find you!" At least I thought it was clever.

Later I heard that Tommy had graduated and I was duly grateful. Then a sad report. I heard that Tommy had terminal cancer. Before I could search him out, he came to see me. When he walked into my office, his body was very badly wasted, and the long hair had all fallen out as a result of chemotherapy. But his eyes were bright and his voice was firm, for the first time, I believe.

"Tommy, I've thought about you so often. I hear you are sick." I blurted out.

"Oh, yes, very sick. I have cancer in both lungs. It's a matter of weeks."

"Can you talk about it, Tom?" I asked.

"Sure; what would you like to know?" he replied.

"What's it like to be only twenty-four and dying?"

"Well, it could be worse."

"Like what?"

"Well, like being fifty and having no values or ideals, like being fifty and thinking that booze, seducing women and making money are the real 'biggies' in life."

I began to look through my mental file cabinet under "S" where I had filed Tommy as strange. (It seems as though everybody I try to reject by classification, God sends back into my life to educate me.)

"But what I really came to see you about," Tom said, "is something you said to me on the last day of class." (He remembered!) He continued, "I asked you if you thought I would ever find God and you said, 'No!' which surprised me. Then you said, 'But He will find you.' I thought about that a lot, even though my search for God was hardly intense at that time. (My "clever" line; he thought about that a lot!)

But when the doctors removed a lump from my groin and told me that it was malignant, then I got serious about locating God. And when the malignancy spread into my vital organs, I really began banging bloody fists against the bronze doors of heaven."

"But God did not come out. In fact, nothing happened. Did you ever try anything for a long time with great effort and with no success? You get psychologically glutted, fed up with trying. And then you quit. Well, one day I woke up, and instead of throwing a few more futile appeals over that high brick wall to a God who may be or may not be there, I just quit. I decided that I didn't really care . . . about God, about an afterlife, or anything like that. I decided to spend what time I had left doing something more profitable. I thought about you and your class, and I remembered something else you had said: "The essential sadness is to go through life without loving. But it would be almost equally sad to go through life and leave this world without ever telling those you loved that you had loved them."

So, I began with the hardest one, my Dad. He was reading the newspaper when I approached him. "Dad". . .

"Yes, what?" he asked without lowering the newspaper.

"Dad, I would like to talk with you. I mean . . . It's really important."

The newspaper came down three slow inches. "What is it?"

"Dad, I love you. I just wanted you to know."

Tom smiled at me and said with obvious satisfaction, as though he felt warm and secret joy flowing inside of him. "The newspaper fluttered to the floor. Then my father did two things I could never remember him ever doing before. He cried and he hugged me. And we talked all night, even though he had to go to work the next morning. It felt so good to be close to my father, to see his tears, to feel his hug, to hear him say that he loved me"

"It was easier with my mother and little brother. They cried with me, too, and we hugged each other and started saying real nice things to each other. We shared the things we had been keeping secret for so many years. I was only sorry about one thing: that I had waited so long."

"Here I was, just beginning to open up to all the people I had actually been close to. Then, one day I turned around and God was there. He didn't come to me when I pleaded with him. I guess I was like an animal trainer holding out a hoop, 'C'mon, jump through. C'mon, I'll give you three days, three weeks.' Apparently God does things in His own way and at His own hour."

"But the important thing is that He was there. He found me. You were right. He found me even after I stopped looking for Him."

"Tommy," I practically gasped, "I think you are saying something very important and much more universal than you realize. To me, at least, you are saying that the surest way to find God is not to make Him a private possession, a problem solver, or an instant consolation in time of need, but rather by opening to love. You know, the Apostle John said that. He said: 'God is love, and anyone who lives in love is living with God and God is living in him.'

"Tom, could I ask you a favor? You know, when I had you in class you were a real pain. But (laughingly) you can make it all up to me now. Would you come into my present Theology of Faith course and tell them what you have just told me? If I told them the same thing it wouldn't be half as effective as if you told it."

"Ooh ... I was ready for you, but I don't know if I'm ready for your class."

"Tom, think about it. If and when you are ready, give me a call."

In a few days Tom called, said he was ready for the class, that he wanted to do that for God and for me. So we scheduled a date. However, he never made it.

He had another appointment, far more important than the one with me and my class. Of course, his life was not really ended by his death, only changed. He made the great step from faith into vision. He found a life far more beautiful than the eye of man has ever seen or the ear of man has ever heard or the mind of man has ever imagined. Before he died, we talked one last time. "I'm not going to make it to your class," he said.

"I know, Tom."

"Will you tell them for me? Will you . . . tell the whole world for me?

"I will, Tom. I'll tell them. I'll do my best."

So, to all of you who have been kind enough to hear this simple statement about love, thank you for listening.

And to you, Tommy, somewhere in the sunlit, verdant hills of heaven: "I told them, Tommy . . . as best I could."

Love Handles

My quote for the day:
Love handles are called that for a reason, so stop fretting over them - it's curves that make the naked body interesting, so be proud of yours.

And in other news, not only is the pic I used here a pic of a model on a cat walk (so yes, love handles do exist for all - and my stomach is firmer than hers, so there), but check out what I found when searching for images of "love handles". I'm not sure if they're trying to say the dude has love handles, or if they're saying he likes girls with love handles, or whether if you have love handles you'll get guys like this posing for you, but regardless, I always knew Absolut vodka was good. :D

Tired!

Yup, that's what I am! - I'm tired. Most of my week sitting in meetings taking notes, coupled with...well, with the usual, and more, has sent my brains to the state of "tiredness". - Which has lead me to do some deep thinking, like wondering what it is that causes you to make so many foolish mistakes when you're tired. - And I don't mean just the "I didn't sleep well last night" type of tiredness, I mean the brain-dead tiredness that you get after trying to keep up with things, but are running out of general energy. I might be original in this (though I doubt it) but when I'm tired I do the strangest things. - Thankfully I have a good sense of humor, and the excuse of those blonde streaks (:D), but seriously, I wonder what the scientific explanation is.

Just a couple examples - I was listening to the song "I don't want to miss a thing" of AeroSmith - I actually really like that song, more than just because I tend to think Ben Affleck is cute, but also because it brings back so many memories. The first memory that pops in my head though is when I first watched the movie "Armageddon". I was in Croatia, the pope at the time was visiting Split, and they had set in place these massive security measures, due to a Nostradamus prophecy that was interpreted to possibly say that the pope would be assassinated on the Adriatic sea on a ship - and lo and behold they had made the pope's podium the shape of a ship - DUH! So yes, they brought in an extra 12,000 police men, etc. (though I always questioned why they didn't just change the shape of his podium), and closed down-town to cars, making our special movie outing rather hard to get to (as the cinema contact was in the center). I was worn out and tired, really tired, which also made me...ummmm...well, foolish isn't quite the word, but for lack of brains to find a better one, I'll use that one. - I was foolish! I had the greatest time watching that movie, I was sitting with two other girls and I was having a ball of a time, making comments about the guys in front of us (all hush-hush, and it didn't seem I was disturbing anyone in the cinema), about the guys in the movie, etc. I didn't think much of it till a week or so later when I'm at a fair trying to provision entrance so we could do outreach, when this young man comes walking up to me all excited to see me "again". - And I couldn't remember him from Adam!

I'm actually quite good with names, faces, etc. but he was totally unknown to me, and I didn't know what to think as he was advertising us to the people in charge, and going on and on about how great we are. (Oh well!) Turns out he was the 2nd fastest runner in Croatia at the time (yeah, I saw him later at the Olympics competing, kind of cool) and was prominent, so the owners were more than fine to let "his friends" in. TTL! He comes back up to me and is going on and on about how he's so pleased to meet us again, at which point I couldn't help myself, and ask him "I'm sorry, I hope this doesn't offend you, but I'm really having a hard time remembering where we met" to which he then says "oh, of course, I saw your face and hair, you didn't see me...I was sitting in front of you at the movie "Armageddon"..." - I must have gone pale or bright red (or both), as he laughed and said that we were great, he was flattered (ahem), etc. Oh dear! I asked him to please go easy on the comments he was making to the owners about us as though that was me during "down-time" I'm also professional during "professional-time" (I guess I work hard, but I play hard too?), and he understood, but boy, did that help me remember to mind my P's and Q's in public. - You never know who is watching and when they'll catch up with you and embarrass you big time.

Then there was yesterday - I went out for some follow-up with Joy, we were all dressed up and I was using M.'s van, which is kinda cool as I feel more "in control" than when I'm in a little car. We're pulling out of our drive-way when this car drives by and the car literally slows down and the men inside were gawking at me. - Which was odd, very odd. (Hello - I might be a white girl, but it's not that original to see them here!) I figure "whatever", but as we're driving down the road I'm noticing I'm getting quite the intense looks from the men in the cars, when I look down and, lo and behold, my shirt is unbuttoned! :D Waa-haa-haa! I laughed, and so did Joy, like DUH, Cel, of course they're gawking, your bra is obvious and your cleavage is ALL there.

Oh well, the Lord does all those things to keep me humble, but He has an easier time pulling them on me when I'm tired.

I found a couple pics of me tired - just to show you how I get.

(Note that the one of me in the blue shirt is me in Croatia several years back after a long night out. Heh - and the one of me in pink is at the 2nd XD, and I was rightfully worn out.)

So yes, all that to say, busy times, I'm tired, but I'm excited too. I'm going to the Benefit dinner Wednesday night. Yay! :) - And I'm also going out witnessing tomorrow afternoon. - Pray it goes super well and that I don't bare my cleavage to all again, or go spilling people's drinks and breaking their glasses (as I did a few weeks ago when my hair got caught - yikes - it's getting that long). Thanks!

Have a fun weekend!
